Oak Creek Wild Horses
I have lived with horses much of my life and yet never experienced anything as majestic as the day spent observing the Oak Creek Wild Morgan horse herd in Tehachapi, Calif. From the moment we pulled into the private land where the horses have lived for a century, I was enchanted. As the stallions gathered up their individual bands of mares and foals, I was able to snap a panoramic picture of them advancing from the watering hole, kicking up dust as they moved across the green field. I was so inspired that I used my last piece of Wallis paper, did a tonal underpainting in burnt sienna, and then painted furiously with pastels for three straight days, trying to capture the magical feeling I had in that moment with the wild horses.
