Canyon Waterfall

I live in Utah and love the beautiful striated canyons in this state. I was struck by this scene because of the complementary interaction of the red/orange creek bed, the green trees and the red/orange canyon walls as well as play of the light. I wanted to experiment with a bolder underpainting and used an acrylic gesso over the initial application of pastel, purposefully leaving the brush marks for texture.
