Mmm...Tasty
I was out painting one morning along the American River when I happened to notice these 2 guys grazing along the water's edge. They seemed to be enjoying a breakfast of tasty(?) river scum. I stopped painting, picked up my camera and started taking pictures. They didn't seem at all bothered by the attention.
I didn't attempt painting them right then - they didn't hold still - but composed a painting back in my studio from the snapshots.
This painting is typical of my work in that I enjoy creating what I call "a complexity of color." You can see this in the water. It's not just one color of blue, but warm blues, cool blues, lavenders and pinks. The shaded side of the birds are handled in a similar manner. The tree that is reflected in the upper left is many variations of greens and roses.
